It is used for security situations where the bar code needs to be invisible to a human but still readable using the infrared light.  The bar code can be printed with infrared absorbing ink and then a second ink or laminate overtop, that passes the infrared light through, hides the bar code from human eyes.

This high performance Worth Data slot badge scanner has the WDP bar code decoder built right into housing, so no separate decoder box is needed, just plug it into a USB port and when you scan a bar code the data will apear as keyboard entry wherever the cursor is placed in any software.

Bar code types supported include UPC/EAN, UCC-EAN 128, Code 39, Full ASCII Code 39, Code 128, Codabar, MSI Plessey, GS1 DataBar, ITF Interleaved 2 of 5, Standard 2 of 5, Bookland EAN, and Code 93. The bar code must be readable a 1/2" from the bottom of the card or tag - we recommend placing the center of the barcode at 1/2" from the bottom edge.
